Historic homes have a certain character to them - and the last thing you want is a walkway that fights against it. That was the whole challenge here. The entrance needed something durable and grounded, not something that looked like it was dropped in from a big-box store catalog.

We went with reclaimed granite for this one. It was the right call. The stone has that worn, honest texture that newer materials just can't fake. Each piece carries a little history in it, and when you lay it right, the whole path feels like it's been there for decades. That's exactly the look this home deserved.

The work covered both the walkway leading to the entrance and the steps themselves. Getting the layout right with reclaimed material takes more patience than working with uniform cut stone - the pieces aren't identical, so you have to think through how they fit together visually and structurally. We work with what the stone gives us, not the other way around.

That's really what good masonry comes down to. It's not just about placing stone - it's about reading the property, matching the material to the architecture, and making sure everything is set solid enough to last. Reclaimed granite is incredibly durable, and when it's properly bedded and leveled, it holds up through freeze-thaw cycles and heavy foot traffic without shifting or cracking.

If you've got an older home and a walkway that feels out of place - or one that's just falling apart - reclaimed stone is worth a serious look. It solves the problem and fits the house at the same time.
