“Gus's crew tore the top section of my failing and leaking chimney down to the roof level and built a new one "from the pan up." Now the chimney, with its hard, water struck bricks and beautiful copper (not lead) metalwork will last beyond the next generations' use of the house. They also built that copper-covered "cricket," which is the structure between the roof and the chimney. A cricket diverts water flow and lingering snow melt away from crashing into and residing along the flat face of the chimney and thus adds longevity to the structure. They should have made one when the house was built. Better to repair it to a higher standard than it was originally built, so it will stand as long as the rest of the house does.
