When someone adds on to their home, the fireplace is often the piece that ties the whole space together. It sets the tone for everything around it. That's a lot of pressure on one wall - and it's exactly why the masonry work has to be done right from the very beginning.

This was a full fireplace build for a home addition on Cape Cod. We're talking about taking it from bare framing all the way to a finished stone surround. The firebox is laid with brick, the face is dressed in natural ledge stone, and the whole thing runs floor to ceiling. It's the kind of work where every course has to be set level and tight, because there's nowhere to hide sloppy joints when the stone is this prominent.

What makes a build like this come together is the layering. The stone isn't just a veneer slapped on the wall - it's built up carefully so the depth and texture read naturally. The varying tones in the stone, the mix of longer horizontal runs with shorter pieces, all of it creates something that looks like it belongs there rather than something that was added on.

The finished room says it all. The fireplace anchors the space without fighting with it. The driftwood mantel adds a coastal character that fits perfectly with Cape Cod. Seating pulled in around it, a TV mounted above, windows on both sides letting in natural light - it works because the foundation of the whole design, the fireplace itself, was built with real care.

A new addition is a significant investment. Getting the fireplace right - structurally sound, properly built, and visually strong - protects that investment and adds genuine value to the home. This is the kind of craftsmanship that lasts.
